The Democratic Ideals Award for Outstanding Youth recognizes two local graduating seniors for civic mindedness and engagement, and future civic aspirations. The award honors students who have promoted democratic ideals in their communities during their tenure at high school. Democratic ideals include justice, equity and fairness, inclusiveness, respect for human dignity and rights, generosity, empathy, compassion and civility. The award is $500 each. Applicants must attend high school in the San Lorenzo Valley or Scotts Valley.
The 2023 deadline to apply is midnight on April 2, 2023. More information on the award is available here, and the application form is available here.
2021 Winner: Jillian Mitchell

Jillian is an SLVHS senior who has served her community as a volunteer math tutor. She has also worked to address civic issues she cares about passionately, gun violence and climate change, by interviewing peers, writing articles and writing legislators. Jillian aspires to earn a degree in Political Science and to work for a politician or organization where she can help make civic changes she sees as critical for the future of all, especially for those who most need an advocate.
